11 La residents charged for going ‘free range’

Eleven people have been arraigned in the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), Sanitation and Motor Court for openly defecating at unauthorised places in the municipality.

The culprits were arrested at dawn on Wednesday at Wizard Park, Roman and beach areas by personnel of the Environmental and Health Division of the assembly.

Mr. Paul Agagba, the Chief Environmental Health Assistant, LaDMA, and Prosecutor, who confirmed this to The Ghanaian Times said the assembly had information that some people had been defecating openly at these places within the municipality.

He said with such information, “the assembly goes in periodically with its taskforce who are deployed to various places, leading to the arrest of the culprits” adding that the assembly would not spare anybody found indulging in open defecation.

The health assistant said, such an initiative was one of the assembly’s measures to curb the spread of diseases in the municipality during the rainy season.

Mr. Agagba said though adequate education and warning had been given to residents to desist from the act, some of them were simply adamant and still indulged in such act.

The Municipal Chief Executive of LaDMA , Ms. Royta Odoley Sowah, said the nuisance still persists but the rate had reduced due to an intensive educational campaign embarked upon by the assembly.

Ms. Sowah said, the assembly would soon enforce its bye-laws on sanitation rather than depending on only education to change the attitude of residents.

The MCE said the assembly would soon post notices on walls of households without toilet facilities and after a month without compliance to construct the facility, the culprits would be arraigned in court.
