11 Injured in accident at Winneba junction

Eleven people sustained injuries in two separate accidents on the Cape-Coast-Winneba Road, near the Winneba Junction, between 4:45 and 5:50a.m on Friday.


Superintendent Charles Obiri, the Winneba Effutu Municipal Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, said the accident involved a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Bus, with registration number GW 7003-15 and Mercedes Benz Truck with registration number WR 1200-13.


He said the Sprinter bus with eight passengers on board and moving from Ajumako Besease to Accra was driven by Samuel Aggrey, while the truck loaded with dry coconut was from Essiama in the Western Region, heading for Nigeria.


Supt Obiri said the driver of the bus, on reaching a section of the road, failed to observe signals from the driver of the truck to stop, resulting in the accident.


He indicated that all the passengers onboard the bus sustained injuries, and were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba, while the vehicle was towed to the Winneba Police Station.


Supt. Obiri said in a related development, at 5:50 a.m, while the road was being cleared for traffic to flow, an Opel Astra Caravan taxi cab, with registration number GR 31-Z, converging three passengers, run into the Mercedes Benz container truck with registration number GT 4309-U, which had stopped as a result of the first accident.


He said the taxi, which was being driven by Samuel Kaka, was moving from Mankoadze to Winneba Junction, while the truck, which was being driven by Marcus Amissah was from Elimina to Tema.


Supt. Obiri said all the passengers in the taxi sustained injuries and were also taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital.


He, however, said the injured were responding to treatment, and cautioned drivers to be careful on the road, and take road regulations seriously to prevent accidents. – GNA
