10th GHAPSA games ends

Accra Polytechnic at the weekend emerged winners to prove that they are a force to reckon with in the Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association’s (GHAPSA) games the 10th edition of the GHAPSA games held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The six-day event saw Accra Polytechnic swept 19 gold, five silver and seven bronze to win with Takoradi Polytechnic placing second with 14 gold,17 silver and nine bronze while the host, Kumasi Polytechnic picked the third place with six gold, six silver and four bronze.

The six-day event was under the theme “Promoting the co-existence of students and staff in the spirit of brotherliness and good sportsmanship”.

The disciplines included javelin, shot put, discus, triple jump, high jump, handball, volleyball, table tennis, tae-kwon-do, basketball, badminton and soccer where Accra Polytechnic beat Takoradi Polytechnic 6-5 on penalties after drawing goalless during regulation.

In the other positions, Sunyani Polytechnic was fourth with three gold, seven silver and one bronze while Cape Coast Polytechnic placed fifth, also collecting three gold, six silver and two bronze with Ho Polytechnic placing sixth with three gold, four silver and eight bronze.

Koforidua Polytechnic picked the seventh position with two gold, six silver and 16 bronze, followed by Bolgatanga Polytechnic with two gold, two silver and three bronze with Wa Polytechnic following in the ninth position with no gold, three silver and one bronze with the 10th place going to Tamale Polytechnic also with no gold, two silver and a bronze.

At the closing ceremony, the rector of Kumasi Polytechnic, Prof. Nicholas Nicodemus Nana Nsowah-Nuamah paid tribute to all those who participated in the games, saying, the games have become an important event on the Polytechnic sports calendar as well as platform for friendship and cultural exchanges across the region.

Earlier in a goodwill message, the rector of Sunyani Polytechnic, Prof K.T.Djang-Fordjour noted that the objective of the games was beyond winning laurels but provided platform for the students to display their youthful exuberance, both physically and mentally and urged all to continue in comradeship.

Rev.Prof. Daniel A.Nyarko, Takoradi Polytechnic rector, congratulated Kumasi Polytechnic for their efforts in hosting the games.
