Mr Joseph Tei Amesimeku, Ho West District Director, Ghana Education Service, has noted improvement in academic performance in the district since 2015
He said Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) improved from 33.3 per cent in 2014 to 68.4 per cent in 2018 in the district and attributed the feat to an annual inter schools quiz competition.
Mr Amesimeku who was speaking at the 2019 grand finale of this year’s competition commended Mr Emmanuel Bedzra, Member of Parliament for the area, sponsor of the event, for the foresight.
The quiz competition, christened the Basic Schools Annual Quiz Competition (BaSAQ-C) was birthed in 2015 to change the narrative of poor academic performance in the District.
Mr Amesimeku said BaSAQ-C had been instrumental in securing the District the 2018 best BECE candidate for the Region and nominated by the Director-General of the GES to receive the President’s Independence Day Award.
He said for the past three years, the first 10 best BECE candidates in the district were finalists or semi-finalists in the quiz competition.
Mr Amesimeku described the performance as unprecedented, recording 10 single digits aggregate in the 2018 BECE, placing second place in Volta Region after Biakoye.
He lauded the efforts of all stakeholders especially the teachers and management in their “famous declaration of operation 100 per cent with more single digits aggregates in 2018 BECE”.
Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament, Ho West, said the importance of education in any forward looking society could not be underestimated as it was the bedrock of developed nations around the world.
He said in ensuring that his area was not left behind, and to help strengthen education at the basic level, he decided to partner with stakeholders in the district to champion the cause.
Mr Bedzra expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and announced that his office would sponsor the tertiary education of Master Prince Awutey, the 2018 best BECE candidate in the area for 2018.
Eli International School at Tsito won this year’s competition with 47.5 points followed by Holuta Aflakpe D.A. School with 26 points while the Akorme Gbogame E.P. Basic School came third with 24 points and Tsito Old JHS, 20 points.
The first and second placed schools were given laptops, laser ink jet Pro printers and certificates with the winner taking a trophy in addition.
Each of the contestants also got a certificate of excellence, a brand new bicycle, mathematical instruments, dictionaries and branded exercise books.
