481 drivers convicted for traffic offences

A total of 481 drivers were convicted by the motor courts to a fine of GH¢318,310.00 in the Accra metropolis for various traffic offences, in the first quarter of the year.

The offences included not possessing driver license, using expired documents, driving under the influence of alcohol, excessive speeding, failure to wear seat belt and crash helmet.

The Commanding Officer of the Central/Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (C/MTTU), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu-Ackaah disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said 593 drivers were apprehended by the police and 525 were sent to Court, 21 drivers are awaiting trial, and 47 under investigations.

ACP Fosu-Ackaah added that 20 bench warrants were issued for the arrest of offending drivers, and 60 drivers were discharged for want of prosecution.

He added that the C/MTTU would continue with its sensitisation programme to drivers to ensure safety, saying “The police would also enforce the law to serve as deterrent to others.”

The C/MMTU expressed worry over the increasing rate of drivers using expired documents and indiscipline on the part of some drivers, adding that most drivers failed to renew their documents, such as road worthy certificates and licenses which was a concern to the police.

The Commanding Officer cautioned drivers to abide by the road safety regulations to ensure that lives and properties were saved in the country.

“The unit has deployed traffic offences teams who do a day to day monitoring and arrest offenders,” he added.

He said drivers should desist from the abuse of sirens, excessive speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and appealed to the media to partner the police to ensure that the roads were safe for commuters.
