Sixteen staff of the New Times Corporation (NTC), on Thursday ended a two-day in-house training seminar on productivity through cleaner production aimed at producing the most competitive and quality newspapers on the market.
It was organised by the management of the NTC as part of its effort to build the capacity of staff particularly with new trends in newspaper production that would prevent waste and to ensure maximum output to meet the needs of the reading public.
With the theme: “Production through cleaner production , better business, healthy environment”, the participants were taken through topics such as ‘Material and Resource Wastes; Targets for Cleaner Production, Engaging People in Cleaner Production, Initial Assessment and Measuring Performance as well as Linking Lean and Cleaner Production Methods.
The acting Managing Director of the NTC, Mr Martin Adu-Owusu, in his closing remarks said it was time that the knowledge and skills of the production staff of the corporation were enhanced on how to produce quality brand of newspapers , the Ghanaian Times and The Spectator, amid limited resources at their disposal.
He urged them to use the experience gained from the two-day event to impact positively on the corporation’s finances and ultimately ensure that products rolled out from the corporation’s staple were the best on the market.
Mr John Wilson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprise (SCORE), a management and human resource development consultancy who facilitated the training, stressed the need for companies to adopt environmentally friendly technologies, develop skills and human resources and enhance productivity to remain competitive.
He said SCORE was an International Labour Organisation (ILO) programme aimed at providing practical training and workplace support designed to increase the productivity of small and medium sized enterprises while promoting recognition of and respect for workers’ rights.
Mr Wilson said the training programme which was the third in the series of training programmes was specifically tailored to ensure a clean production that seek to utilise energy, water, material, and chemical resources more efficiently while also reducing pollution and waste.
He urged the participants to serve as training of trainers by impacting the knowledge and skills to other staff for the overall development of the corporation.
