Contractors demand payment from government

The Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) has called on government to honour its campaign promise of paying unpaid contractors.

It also said the government must explain the status of $1.5 billion contracted through the GETFund to pay contractors, and another GH¢3.5 billion loan government took to pay unpaid contractors.

This was contained in a press release issued by the ABCECG and signed by its National  President, Prosper Y. Ledi,  after its two-day capacity building on concrete technology under the theme “Towards A Quality Construction Works in Ghana – The Role of the Ghanaian Contractors,”  organised by Mc-Bauchemie and  sponsored by CIMAF Ghana Limited.

It said government should direct that Retention Money Guarantees were included in the Procurement Authority Standards Tender Documents for contract formation to enable contractors to invest such monies in government bonds and instruments.

The statement said government should help contractors to access finance from banks in the country since the banking sector had lost confidence in the construction industry due the inability of contractors to pay loans contracted from the banks.

It said government should assist in reducing construction costs by promptly paying contractors for works done.

“The ABCEGG commends government of Ghana for measures announced in the State of the Nation Address to bridge the housing deficit but urges government to further engage the services of the professional groups and associations in dialogues towards this goal,” the statement said.

It entreated the President to ensure that local contractors play leading role in the government housing projects it announced in the State of the Nation Address.

“The Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana is ready to join the other six groups namely Vehicle and Asset Dealers Association of Ghana (VADAG), National Concerned Spare Parts Dealers Association, True Drivers Union, Concerned Drivers Association, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Chamber of Petroleum Consumers to demonstrate against Ghana government’s imposition of luxury vehicle tax on pick-ups, trucks etc,” the statement said.

It mentioned some of the topics treated at the workshop as types of cements and their unique selling points, descriptive design of concrete, and strategies on how to achieve the best concrete quality at reduced costs.
